PROSPECTUS:


The Water’s Edge Artists – Painters for Preservation is an alliance of plein air artists dedicated to conservation, preservation and protection of scarce, endangered or threatened places in Wisconsin through collaboration with local, state, and national organizations. 

ELIGIBILITY:

Competition is open to all current Water’s Edge Artists members. Artists may enter works created from Water’s Edge Artists paint outs, individually, or at other gatherings. Submitted work may be either studio or plein air. Work should represent scarce, endangered or threatened natural resources, or historic places and spaces. All work entered must be original in concept/execution, and have been created within the last three years. No work done in a class, workshop or under supervision is eligible. Art in the following categories are eligible: oil, oil pastel, paintstik, pastel, drawing/dry media, water media/other. (Mixed media, etc.) No photographic or electronic/computer generated art will be allowed. Exhibited work from past WEA Rahr-West exhibits is not eligible.

Postmarked deadline for Entries is August 10th, 2017.  Acceptance notices will be mailed on or after August 28th, 2017.

Water’s Edge Artists hope to represent as many artist members as possible. However, space in this show is limited to 40 works of art. There is NO GUARANTEE that each artist member will have work chosen. Acceptance is based upon the number of entries, the quality of the work entered, and the available space to exhibit. At least one piece will be selected per accepted artist. More than one piece per accepted artists may be chosen at the discretion of the juror. Acceptance will be based on juried digital images. Images submitted must represent the actual work to be considered. The Rahr-West reserves the right to refuse to exhibit any work they deem unacceptable due to poor craftsmanship or significant departure from submitted image representation. Rahr–West decisions are final.

AWARDS:

Prize money and ribbons will be awarded at the Opening Reception on Friday, October 7th, 2016 for “Best of Show,” 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Cash prizes of $250, $200, $150, and $100 will be awarded for Best of Show, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place respectively. No artist will be awarded “Best of Show” in consecutive exhibits.

IMAGE PREPARATION:

Artists may submit up to three portfolio quality digital image files via e-mail, or on one CD. Each image must be at least 1MB file size. If the artwork to be entered is more than 8” on any side, size the image so that the longest side measures at least 8” (2400 pixels) but no more than 12” (3600 pixels). If the actual size of the artwork is smaller than 8” on its longest side, the image should be at it’s actual size at 300 dpi (dots per inch) resolution, or 300 ppi (pixels per inch). Save the files as a .jpg or .jpeg file at “high” or “maximum” quality. Each .jpg image file should be named with the artist’s last name and the title of the piece. Images should ONLY be of the artwork. Do not include matting, frame, etc. in the image. These are the images that will be used for any promotional duplication. Only .jpg images conforming to these standards will be considered. Either e-mail or clearly label the CD with the artist’s name, title for each work, medium, size and year completed. CDs become the property of Water’s Edge Artists and may not be returned.

 ENTRY FEE:

Each entry must be accompanied by an official entry form and a check or money order made payable to Water’s Edge Artists in the amount of $30 for up to three entries. The entry fee is $30 whether an artist enters one, two, or three pieces. Do not send cash. Entry fees are non-refundable. Even if art entry photographs are sent via website e-mail, entry forms and fees must be mailed to Chuck Eaton, “Art of Preservation” Exhibit, 1915  17th Avenue, Menominee, MI 49858.

 PRESENTATION & DELIVERY/SHIPPING:

Artwork may not exceed 36” in height or width canvas size or 42” in height or width framed size, and may not exceed 80 lbs. in weight. All entries must be suitably framed and wired for hanging. (No clips or saw-tooth hangers.) Works on paper must be framed; museum glass recommended for delivered artworks, and plexiglass must be used for work that is shipped. Finalists will ship or deliver works to Rahr-West Art Museum from Tuesday, September 20 through Wednesday, September 28, 2016. Shipped work must be sent in a reusable container. The artist is responsible for the cost of shipping to and from the Rahr-West Art Museum.

Work that has been accepted must be delivered between 10 AM and 4 PM Tuesday, September 19 through Wednesday, September 27, 2017. (The Rahr is open Saturday and Sunday. The museum is closed on Mondays, but arrangements may be able to be made to deliver art. Please contact the Rahr directly. This provides 8 days to deliver art.) Exhibition will be on display from Sunday, October 1 through Sunday, October 29, 2017. A Collector’s Preview Party, Award Presentation, and Opening Reception will be held Friday, October 6th from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. After close of show, artworks will be picked up the week of Tuesday, October 31 through Friday, November 3, 2017.

SALES:

Works must be available for sale at the exhibition. Upon sales of artwork: 65% of proceeds will go to the artist, 15% will go Water’s Edge Artists to serve its mission and purpose, and 20% will go to the Rahr-West. Any local, state or national preservation organization to receive partial proceeds from the sale of art work will be chosen at the discretion of Water’s Edge Artists. Rahr-West is not a selling agent, and will not collect Wisconsin sales tax. Rahr-West will only forward monies it receives form the purchaser of art directly to the artist. Rahr-West will not deliver sold art. It is the artist’s responsibility to provide a 20% donation to the Rahr-West, 15% to WEA, and applicable sales tax to the state of Wisconsin.

 LIABILITY:

Artists should insure their hand-delivered or shipped work, as Water’s Edge Artists and Rahr-West are not liable for damage to artwork in transit or during display at the museum.

OTHER CONDITIONS:

Artists agree to abide by all exhibit rules. Failure to comply with these rules constitutes withdrawal from the exhibit. If Water’s Edge Artists and/or the Rahr West deem the pool of entrants insufficient, the exhibit will be canceled and all fees will be returned to entrants.

 EXHIBITION SCHEDULE:

August 10, 2017:  Entry Deadline. All entries must be postmarked by this date.

August 28, 2017:  Notifications Mailed

September 19-27, 2017:  Accepted art work must be received at the Rahr Museum

October 1, 2017:  Exhibition opens

October 6, 2017:  Opening Reception at the Rahr – 5:00-7:00pm

October 31-November 3, 2017:  Pick up unsold art
